The
Sacagawea dollar series honors Sacagawea, a Native American
woman of the Lemhi Shoshone tribe, Her name means "bird
woman." Sacagawea's skills as a guide and interpreter
were crucial for the success of the first overland expedition
to the Pacific coast and back, initiated by US President
Thomas Jefferson, and led by Meriwether Lewis and William
Clark. Sacagawea was 15 years old at the start of the journey
in 1804, and in the company of her husband, Toussaint Charbonneau,
