The
Franklin silver half dollar series, issued from 1948 through
1963, was minted in honor of Benjamin Franklin - not president,
but statesman, diplomat, scientist, inventor, printer, and
publisher. He is one of America's most respected and accomplished
founding fathers. As a testament to Franklin's greatness,
his is the first regular-issue coin in United States history
to feature an actual person who was not a President. It
is also the last US coin series minted every year in 90%
fine silver. Designed by US Mint Chief Engraver John Sinnock,
the coin features a classic profile of Franklin facing to
the right on the obverse, while the reverse depicts Philadelphia's
famous Liberty Bell. Mint marks can be found above the bell
on the reverse. D for Denver, S for San Francisco - Proof,
and no mint mark for Philadelphia.
